Description
Mahonia japonica is a popular shrub, instantly recognisable for its distinctive spiky leaves and long racemes of golden winter flowers. The blooms appear in profusion from November through to March, releasing a strong ‘lily-of-the-valley’ perfume. They are closely followed by blue-black berries. This reliable, evergreen shrub has a spreading, bushy habit that forms fabulous groundcover and makes an impenetrable security plant. Mahonia is adaptable and robust, thriving in challenging shaded positions where many other plants would struggle. Height: 1.5m (59"). Spread: 2m (78").

How to Grow
Grow Mahonia plants in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds.Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
More Info
Mahonia plants require little pruning but may benefit from a trim in spring to remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant.
