Description

Spring glamour in a perfectly sized package. Magnolia x loebneri 'Donna' is a small tree or large shrub ideal for smaller gardens, captivating in March and April when large, flat white flowers up to 20cm across open on bare branches. The star-shaped blooms, formed from narrow petals, are wonderfully elegant and lightly scented, creating a striking seasonal display.

A refined cross between Magnolia stellata and Magnolia kobus, it combines the best qualities of both parents, including excellent hardiness and greater tolerance of alkaline soils than many magnolias. After flowering, glossy mid-green foliage fills out the framework, giving this RHS Award of Garden Merit winner a strong architectural presence in borders or on lawns, even in cooler climates.

Ultimate height: 4m (13ft). Ultimate spread: 3m (9.8ft).

How to Grow
Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Magnolia plants establish quicker when their roots are shaded. Following planting, apply a mulch of rotted bark chips, manure or garden compost, taking care not to mound it around the stem of the plant.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young magnolias are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant. Magnolias require little pruning other than to maintain their shape and remove damaged stems or crossing stems.
