Description

Iris setosa is perfect for adding a splash of vivid colour to damp borders, pond edges, or naturalistic planting schemes. The flowers have very large falls that are a vivid deep violet blue with delicate white markings, topped by discrete standards. The spring and early summer blooms are accompanied by mid-green, strappy, arching leaves that spread to form dense clumps. Thriving in ponds or boggy soils, it makes a reliable choice for wildlife friendly gardens, attracting pollinators while offering rich colour and graceful foliage. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Water depth: 0-15cm. Ultimate height: 70cm to 100cm (27in-39in). Ultimate spread: 50cm (20in).

How to Grow

Water iris thrive in damp, acid or neutral soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. These moisture loving iris require a rich, fertile soil which has had plenty of well rotted organic matter added into the soil prior to planting. Grow in moist, boggy soils or submerged in the shallow margins of ponds with the crown to a maximum depth of up to 20cm (8") below water level. Choose a position in sun or semi shade.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
When grown in damp borders, water iris require reliably moist soil. Water if necessary during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Overcrowded clumps of iris can be divided in summer after flowering. Mulch around the base in spring to help retain moisture at their roots. Iris that are grown in ponds may be cut back to just above the water surface in autumn.
