Description

A subtle alternative to its brasher yellow cousin, Iris pseudacorus 'Alba' offers creamy-white blooms with purple veined falls in May and June.

This native marginal plant is perfect for pond edges and moist soils, thriving in both full sun and partial shade. Its upright, sword-like foliage adds vertical interest even when not in flower and is perfect for defining and framing the pond edge. Less vigorous and less prone to rampant self seeding than the yellow form, it suits smaller ponds and wildlife gardens, providing a valuable habitat as well as attracting pollinators. Planting depth: Zones 1, 2 & 3 to 20cm (8in) below water level. Ultimate height: 1m (3.2ft). Ultimate spread: 30cm (12in).

How to Grow

Iris pseudacorus plants thrive in damp, acid or neutral soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. These moisture loving Iris require a rich, fertile soil which has had plenty of well rotted organic matter added into the soil prior to planting. Grow Iris pseudacorus in moist, boggy soils or submerged in the shallow margins of ponds with the crown to a maximum depth of up to 20cm (8") below water level. Choose a position in sun or semi shade.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
When grown in damp borders, Iris pseudoacorus require reliably moist soil. Water if necessary during dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Overcrowded clumps of Iris plants can be divided in summer after flowering. Mulch around the base of Iris pseudoacorus in spring to help retain moisture at their roots. Iris that are grown in ponds may be cut back to just above the water surface in autumn.
