Description

Hesperantha coccinea ‘Pink Princess’ is a subtle variety bearing spikes of large, cup-shaped flowers in the palest pink above clumps of flat, grassy foliage. It is brilliant for extending flowering interest well beyond its normal limits, as blooming starts in September and continues through to the first frosts - even persisting through to December in mild locations such as coastal gardens. Despite its exotic appearance, this South African perennial is perfectly hardy. It enjoys a reliably moist site through summer and can even be planted in pond margins or a sunny bog garden. The flowers are especially attractive to autumn-flying butterflies. It makes a lovely cut flower at a time when blooms are scarce in the garden. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 60cm (24in) Spread: 30cm (12in).

How to Grow
Grow Schizostylis/Hesperantha in reliably moist, well drained soil in full sun. Choose a position with shelter from strong winds. Less than ideal soils can be improved by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Plant Kaffir Lily bulbs at a depth of 5cm (2") and a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Hesperantha bulbs prefer their roots to be moist at all times in order to flower well. Water bulbs regularly during dry periods to maintain a reliably moist soil. Deadhead faded Kaffir Lily flowers throughout the season to encourage more blooms to be produced. Cut back faded flower stems in autumn, and provide a dry mulch of bark chips or straw to protect the plants from severe winter weather. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Schizostylis in spring.
