Light up your late summer garden with this vibrant and reliable perennial, Helenium autumnale 'Red Shades’. Just as many of the plants in your borders are starting to fade, this one springs into action to pick up the slack and carry the season of colour effortlessly into autumn, often flowering right through to October. Smothered in brilliant red blooms which sit at the top of upright stems, this hardy perennial forms a high-impact, prolific group which just gets better every year. Very low maintenance, ideal for the middle of a sunny border and sits well in cottage-garden or prairie styles. With nectar-rich blooms, bees and butterflies will love it too. Height: 1m (40”). Spread: 60cm (24”).

How to Grow

Grow helenium plants in full sun. This hardy perennial prefers a soil that is rich in organic matter and reliably moist. Add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil to improve its structure and fertility prior to planting.

Feed and water plants regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded helenium flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced. Divide overcrowded clumps of helenium in spring and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
