Rarely seen in the UK, Gelsemium sempervirens is a captivating tropical climber that brings glossy evergreen foliage, exotic-looking flowers and unusual fragrance to sheltered gardens or bright conservatories.
In mild, southerly parts of the UK, this half-hardy, twining climber will grow in sheltered positions outside such as against warm walls or in protected courtyard spaces where its fragrant flowers appear in spring and early summer. Alternatively, it makes a spectacular conservatory specimen where its evergreen foliage provides year-round interest while its flowers offer an incredible winter treat – with blooming lasting around three months! Abundant clusters of 3cm long, funnel-shaped, golden yellow flowers with orange throats tumble from a curtain of slender, glossy foliage, the blooms releasing a sweet violet-like scent that hangs in the air.
This showy climber makes a superb choice for growing in a conservatory or planted into a patio pot and moved into a frost-free position to overwinter. Ultimate height: 2.5m (8.2ft) to 4m (13ft). Ultimate spread: 50cm (20in) to 1m (3.2ft).
Please note that all parts of Gelsemium are poisonous.
