Description

Like other montana varieties, Clematis montana ‘Wilsonii’ is an energetic climber, rapidly colonising any obstacle and perfect for covering large walls and arbours, disguising unsightly features or even scrambling up trees. The last of the montanas to flower, it blooms from May to July, bearing star-shaped white flowers, tinged green with creamy green stamens. Although the flowers may be small, they are produced in excess, cascading in pillowy drifts and filling the garden with an intense fragrance of chocolate and vanilla! Pruning group: 1

Height and spread: 6m x 6m (20ft).

How to Grow
When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in early spring on the previous year’s growth. Routine pruning is not required but if necessary damaged or dead stems can be removed in summer after flowering. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
