Sowing

Sow Gaillardia in spring on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Lightly cover the seed with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) or seal it inside a polythene bag. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged and not exclude light as this aids germination which usually takes 14-21 days.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When Blanket flower plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days. Transplant outdoors in any fertile, well drained soil in full sun, at a distance of 30cm (12") apart.

More Info
Feed and water Blanket Flower plants until they are fully established. Once established Gaillardia copes well with dry soils and is reasonably drought tolerant. Regular deadheading of faded Gaillardia flowers will encourage more blooms to be produced. In late summer, cut back old foliage and flower stems to 15cm (6") to encourage basal growth before the first frosts. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of Blanket Flower in spring, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant.
