Description

Foxglove 'Illumination Purple' stands out as an award-winning perennial, celebrated for its strikingly exotic hues, prolonged flowering season, and innovative breeding background. This remarkable plant showcases spires of tubular flowers that resemble orchids, adorned in a vibrant magenta-purple shade complemented by eye-catching orange throats. Unlike traditional foxgloves, which have a shorter blooming period, 'Illumination Purple' delights gardeners with its ability to produce flowers from early summer all the way through autumn, making it a stunning addition to any garden.

The origins of this captivating plant can be traced back to a hybridization between Digitalis purpurea and a species from the Canary Islands known as Isoplexis. This unique cross not only enhances the plant's vigor but also extends its blooming time, allowing for a more robust display of color throughout the growing season. The semi-evergreen foliage forms a lush, upright clump that adds structure and greenery to the landscape, making it an excellent choice for mixed borders, container arrangements, or as a striking focal point in modern garden designs.

One of the notable features of 'Illumination Purple' is its sterile flowers, which prevent self-seeding and enable the plant to channel more energy into producing an impressive array of blooms. This variety is particularly beneficial for attracting pollinators, including bees and hummingbird moths, which play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy garden ecosystem. For optimal growth, this foxglove thrives in moist yet well-drained soil, ideally situated in full sun or partial shade. It is also hardy enough to flourish in most UK gardens, although some winter protection may be necessary in colder regions to ensure its continued success. Height: 90cm (3 ft). Spread: 45cm (1.5 ft).

How to Grow
Although foxgloves prefer a fertile, moist soil, they will happily tolerate almost any soil except those that are excessively dry or waterlogged.

More Info
Water foxglove plants regularly until fully established. Foxgloves self-seed freely. If seedlings are not wanted, deadhead stems of foxglove flowers as the blooms fade. In autumn, cut back old stems to encourage plenty of new side shoots. Caution: All parts of foxgloves are toxic if eaten, and contact with the foliage may irritate the skin and eyes.
