Description

This collection includes a bumper  selection of ten fantastic varieties of perennials perfect for a long lasting colourful garden with a selection of popular hardy perennials which deserve a prime spot in the garden. The blooms of this collection are long-lasting and continue well into autumn and get stronger and larger each year. Undemanding and easy to grow, they're perfect for cutting and bringing indoors for a floral display for years to come.

This superb collection is the easy route to a stunning cottage garden scheme. Plant these fabulous perennials in sunny borders for a colourful display that will last all summer long. These top quality plants will establish quickly, increasing in size and performance year after year.

Your collection will include the following varieties:

A. Hollyhock ‘Chater’s Double Mixed’ - Architectural spires of ruffled, double blooms tower over summer borders adding structure and a riot of colour.
B, Crocosmia - Form dense clumps of upright sword-shaped foliage, from which sprays of bright orange or red flowers, carried in branched spikes, appear in late summer.
C. Physalis Chinese Lantern - A highly unusual and exotic looking plant that provides garden interest throughout the seasons. In midsummer the plant is covered in small creamywhite flowers, later in the year they produce bright red-orange papery calyces that look like Chinese lanterns.
D. Gypsophila Rosea - Low, creeping plant that makes lovely ground cover for rockeries and gravel gardens. Sprays of tiny pink flowers appear in summer, above the semi-evergreen foliage.
E. Lupin ‘Russel Hybrids’ - These elegant lupins produce tall spires of tightly packed flowers, that rise above palmate foliage in a magical array of colours.
F. Aquilegia McKana Hybrids - A cottage garden classic, these delightful aquilegia flowers of up to 7.5cm (3”) wide create a bright and uplifting display of vibrant, long-spurred blooms.
G. Convallarai Majalis – This ever popular perennial is an excellent ground cover for the moist humus-rich areas of the garden creating a blanket of white bell shaped flowers with long green leaves.
H. Eryngium Planum - A handy little plant for the border, as they’ll grow in many different types of soil.
I. Echinacea Purpurea - These robust perennials bloom over a long period, attracting bees and butterflies to their daisy-like flower heads. Echinacea purpurea is tough and reliable, coping well on most soils and happily tolerating coastal conditions.
J. Echinops Ritro - Tight clusters of deep blue flowers form mini-globes on long, strong straight stems of pure silver. The foliage is amazing and quite unique, giving off a silver sheen whatever the weather.

How to Grow
Pot up plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until all risk of frost has passed. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before transplanting into borders and containers. The herbaceous perennials in this collection can be grown in any moist, fertile soil, in sun or semi shade. Work some compost or general fertiliser into the top 20cm of the soil prior to planting. Please see individual varieties for more information.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. The growth points of most bare root perennials should be set about an inch below the soil surface. New growth will appear in spring.

More Info
In autumn, cut back the old foliage to ground level and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plants. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of perennials in autumn to maintain their vigour. Caution: Contact with Foxgloves may irritate the skin and eyes, and are toxic if eaten. Please see individual varieties for more information.
