Description

Prepare to be wowed by dinner-plate drama that stops visitors in their tracks. Dahlia 'Emory Paul' is a gobsmacking giant, producing flowers up to 25cm across with heavily petal-filled blooms that are utterly sumptuous. Gently waved fuchsia-pink petals create a sense of movement creating a striking presence in borders, beds and containers.

Flowering just as other plants begin to fade in late summer, it takes centre stage and keeps the show going right through to the first frosts. Pair it with late-season stars such as asters, salvias, crocosmia and ornamental grasses for a spectacular display that fills your outdoor space with colour and elegance long after most flowers have finished. Don’t keep all the beauty outside either, as the lavish blooms make superb cut flowers for striking indoor arrangements. Ultimate height: 1m (3.2ft). Ultimate spread: 60cm (24in).

How to Grow
Plant Dahlia tubers outdoors in April after all risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny position in moist well drained soil. Prepare the soil by digging in plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Plant tubers at a depth of 15cm (6") and water well. Alternatively, start tubers into growth in pots of compost in a frost free greenhouse. Transplant them into their final positions outdoors in June.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info

Feed and water lily bulbs regularly throughout the growing season, keeping them moist at all times. Deadhead faded blooms at the base of the flower where they join the stem to prevent the development of seed pods. When cutting lily flowers for indoor arrangements, it is important to leave a third of the stem intact in order to feed the bulb for the following year.

After flowering leave the stems intact until they begin to yellow in autumn. Reduce watering and move containers of lilies to a cool, frost free position over winter. Lilies grown in borders can be lifted, cleaned and stored for the winter, however in mild areas most lilies should survive outdoors provided that the soil is not too wet. A mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost should be applied in spring. Divide and repot container grown lilies into fresh compost every other year.
