Description

Crataegus x lavalleei 'Carrierei' is an impressive ornamental hawthorn that delivers season?after?season drama in a compact and graceful form. Its glossy, dark green foliage forms a dense, rounded crown, setting the stage for large clusters of crisp white flowers in late spring and a spectacular display of vibrant orange?red haws through autumn into winter that attract birds and add colour when little else does in the garden.

Tough and adaptable, this hybrid thrives in a wide range of soils, tolerates urban and coastal exposure, and brings interest from spring blossom right through to winter berries, while in autumn its foliage turns brilliant crimson and bronze adding further appeal. With wildlife?friendly credentials and the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, it makes an elegant specimen or feature tree in any outdoor space. Ultimate height: 7m (23ft). Ultimate spread: 4m (13ft).

How to Grow
Grow Crataegus plants in sun or shade, in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Hawthorn at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Crataegus requires only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in winter. If grown as a hedge, Hawthorn can be trimmed in Summer or Autumn, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary.
