Description

Cosmos atrosanguineus, often referred to as Chocolate Cosmos, is a delightful perennial that captivates gardeners and flower enthusiasts alike with its strikingly dark blooms and enchanting aroma. The flowers, which range in color from a deep maroon to an almost black hue, exhibit a velvety texture and a shape reminiscent of daisies, making them a unique addition to any garden. Their rich coloration not only adds depth to floral arrangements but also serves as a stunning contrast against the lush greenery of the plant's foliage.

One of the most appealing features of Chocolate Cosmos is their subtle yet alluring chocolate fragrance, which becomes particularly pronounced on warm, sunny days. This delightful scent not only enhances the sensory experience of the garden but also attracts a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies, contributing to a vibrant ecosystem. The blooming period typically spans from mid-summer to early autumn, allowing for an extended display of beauty that can brighten any outdoor space.

With a compact, clump-forming growth habit and dark green, fern-like leaves, Chocolate Cosmos thrive best in full sun and well-drained soil that maintains moderate moisture levels. While they are sensitive to frost, making them more suitable as tender perennials or summer bedding plants in cooler regions, their versatility allows them to shine in containers, borders, or as striking cut flowers. Whether used to create a stunning focal point in a garden or to bring a touch of elegance indoors, these charming flowers are sure to leave a lasting impression. Height: 45 cm (18 in) Spread: 45 cm (18 in).

How to Grow
Pot up cosmos plants and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise cosmos plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting out in beds, borders and containers. Choose a position in full sun on any moist, well drained soil.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
When growing Cosmos plants, water regularly until they are fully established. Deadhead faded Cosmos flowers regularly to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer.
