Description

Cornus alba 'Red Gnome' is a delightful compact deciduous shrub that stands out in any garden, particularly during the winter months when its vibrant red stems create a stunning visual contrast against a snowy or pale backdrop. This shrub not only adds a splash of color in the colder seasons but also offers year-round interest with its changing foliage. In the autumn, the green leaves transition into beautiful shades of red and purple before they gracefully fall, enhancing the seasonal display.

In late spring to early summer, 'Red Gnome' produces clusters of small white flowers that add a delicate touch to the landscape. These blooms are often followed by the appearance of white berries, which can attract various birds and wildlife, making this shrub a great choice for those looking to enhance their garden's ecological value. The bright red stems, coupled with the charming flowers, create a dynamic visual appeal that can enliven any garden space throughout the year.

This shrub's compact, rounded growth habit makes it an excellent option for smaller gardens, borders, or as a low hedge, allowing for versatile landscaping possibilities. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil, making it adaptable to a variety of conditions, including colder climates and urban environments. Regular pruning in late winter not only helps maintain its compact form but also ensures the stems retain their vibrant color, making 'Red Gnome' a low-maintenance yet striking addition to any garden. Height: 75 cm (2.5 ft) Spread: 100 cm (3.3 ft).

How to Grow
Plant Dogwood into garden borders in any moist, well drained garden soil, in full shade or part shade. Cornus is a very useful shrub, as it can also tolerate damp soils or an exposed position.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water dogwoods regularly until fully established. Once established, they will require less attention. To encourage plenty of colourful stems, Dogwood will need regular pollarding in early spring. Cut back all dogwood stems to 3 buds above soil level or to a permanent low framework. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or other organic matter around the base of the plant after pruning. Caution: Dogwood berries are harmful if eaten. Irritant to skin and eyes.
