Description

Clematis 'Ninon' is a charming compact deciduous climber from the Boulevard® series, known for its striking white flowers adorned with wavy-edged petals and vibrant red or magenta stamens. This plant blooms abundantly from early summer through autumn, providing a continuous display of elegance in any garden setting.

The climbing nature of 'Ninon' is complemented by its twining leaf stalks and lush green foliage, making it an attractive choice for various vertical spaces. Each flower measures approximately 10 cm (4 in) across, showcasing a pure white hue that contrasts beautifully with its colorful stamens. While the blooms are not particularly fragrant, they are highly appealing to pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

This clematis thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil. Hardy in the UK down to -10°C, it is suitable for trellises, fences, containers, or small garden areas. For optimal growth, it is recommended to prune in late winter or early spring, as well as after the initial flowering period, to encourage further blooms. The plant typically reaches a height of 150 cm (59 in) and a spread of 120 cm (47 in).

How to Grow
Pot up clematis plants and grow them on until large enough to plant in their final positions. When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in early spring on the previous year's growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning Clematis armandii, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within it's alloted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
