Description

Clematis 'Bee's Jubilee' is a compact, deciduous climbing plant renowned for its striking, bicolored flowers and its ability to bloom repeatedly throughout the growing season. Since its introduction in 1958, it has become a favored option for gardeners seeking to enhance vertical spaces with vibrant color and texture.

This climber can reach a height of 300 cm (118 in) and spread up to 100 cm (39 in), featuring twining leaf stalks that support its growth. The foliage consists of mid-green, deciduous leaves, while the flowers are notable for their large, 20 cm (8 in) soft mauve-pink petals, accented by a deep carmine central bar and creamy yellow stamens. Blooming occurs from late spring to early summer, with a secondary flowering period extending into late summer and early autumn, although the plant is not fragrant.

Clematis 'Bee's Jubilee' thrives in full sun to partial shade, particularly benefiting from afternoon shade in hotter climates. It prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil and requires regular watering, especially during dry spells. Hardy in the UK, it can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C. This versatile plant is perfect for trellises, fences, arbors, and containers, while also attracting pollinators like bees. For optimal growth, it should be pruned in late winter or early spring, as well as after the first bloom, to encourage further flowering.

How to Grow
When planting clematis, choose a position in sun or semi-shade and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well drained soil. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil based compost. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in summer on new stems which develop from the previous year’s growth. Pruning should be undertaken in spring before active growth begins. When pruning group 2 Clematis, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
