Description

Blackberry ‘Loch Tay’ is a superb early to mid-season variety, ideal for gardeners looking to enjoy homegrown blackberries ahead of the main harvest. A sister variety to the popular ‘Loch Ness’, this compact cultivar is prized for its sweet, aromatic flavour and reliable performance, making it one of the best thorn-free, compact blackberries available.

With its semi-upright habit and thornless canes reaching up to 1.5 metres, ‘Loch Tay’ is well-suited to smaller gardens, offering both ease of handling and space-saving growth. Its berries are slightly smaller than those of ‘Loch Ness’, but what they lack in size, they more than make up for in taste—delivering a rich, sweet flavour that sets them apart.

Ripening begins in late July and continues through most of August, giving a generous crop of juicy blackberries over several weeks. The firm-textured fruit is also resistant to downy mildew, ensuring healthy plants and high-quality harvests even in wet conditions.

Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Blackberry ‘Loch Tay’ is a dependable and delicious addition to any fruit garden, combining flavour, disease resistance, and compact, thornless growth in one package. Ultimate height and spread: 1.5m (4.9ft).

How to Grow
Plant blackberry bushes in a sunny position in any well drained soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the ground prior to planting. When growing blackberry plants, support the stems on a framework of wires stretched between sturdy 1.8m (6') posts, or trained against a trellis or wall.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water well for the first year until blackberry plants are fully established. Train the stems onto their supports as they grow. Cover the plants with netting to protect the crop from birds as blackberry fruits begin to develop. Blackberries can be harvested from July onwards. In autumn, prune the canes which have fruited over summer to ground level. Canes which have not fruited should be 'tied in' to their supports. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the canes to improve moisture retention throughout the summer.
