This deciduous fern produces dramatic fronds of silvery green foliage with beet-red midribs. The arching fronds form an elegant clump of foliage that makes superb ground cover for a damp, shaded spot. Athyrium niponicum var. pictum 'Pewter Lace' is an exceptionally beautiful hardy perennial, offering good architectural interest and fabulous texture on neutral to acid soils. Ideal for planting in borders, containers, woodland edges or the boggy soil next to ponds. Height: 50cm (19"). Spread: 100cm (39").

How to Grow

Plant Athyrium in sheltered, dappled shade in fertile, moist, acid or neutral, soil. Athyrium ferns prefer a soil that is rich in organic matter so add some well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil prior to planting. Japanese painted ferns require a reliably moist or boggy soil. Grow them in bog gardens or in the damp soil at the edge of ponds.

Feed and water ferns regularly until they are fully established. Apply mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the crown of each plant in spring.
