Description

Astilbe × arendsii, commonly known as the Arendsii Group, is a charming herbaceous perennial that forms dense clumps, celebrated for its delicate, feathery flower plumes and vibrant, fern-like leaves. This plant thrives in shady environments, making it an excellent choice for borders, woodland gardens, or areas near water features. With its ability to produce stunning blooms throughout the summer months, Astilbe offers a low-maintenance option for gardeners seeking to add color and texture to their landscapes without extensive care.

The flowers of Astilbe come in a delightful array of colors, including white, pink, red, coral, and purple, with plume-like panicles of tiny blossoms that typically appear from early to mid-summer. The foliage is equally appealing, featuring ternately compound leaves that are serrated and can range from lush green to rich bronze hues. When provided with consistent moisture, the leaves maintain their beauty throughout the growing season, contributing to the overall aesthetic of the garden.

This perennial prefers conditions of partial to full shade and thrives in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil, as it is not tolerant of drought. Astilbe is also known for its resilience against deer and rabbits, making it a reliable choice for gardens where these animals are a concern. Additionally, it attracts butterflies, adding a lively element to shade gardens. For maintenance, gardeners can choose to cut back the flower stems after blooming or leave them for winter interest, and dividing the clumps every three to four years will help rejuvenate the plant and promote healthy growth. Height: 120 cm (4 ft). Spread: 100 cm (3 ft).

How to Grow
Plant astilbes in sun or dappled shade. Astilbe plants require rich fertile soil that remains permanently moist, even in the height of summer. A boggy soil next to a pond or stream is ideal. On drier soils, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost prior to planting and choose a shaded position.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Divide over-crowded clumps of astilbe in spring when necessary, to increase their longevity. Apply a mulch around the base of the plant in spring to conserve moisture in the soil.
