Description

Aster alpinus ‘Albus’, commonly known as the White Alpine Aster, is a delightful perennial that forms a dense mat, making it a favorite among gardeners. Its striking white daisy-like flowers, which feature vibrant golden-yellow centers, bloom from late spring to early summer, adding a touch of brightness to any landscape. The plant's evergreen basal foliage consists of narrow, lanceolate leaves that create a compact mound, providing year-round interest. This charming aster thrives in sunny, well-drained locations, making it an excellent choice for rockeries, borders, and container gardens.

In terms of cultivation, the White Alpine Aster flourishes in poor to average soils, particularly those that are sandy or calcareous. It prefers full sun and requires sharply drained conditions to thrive. Once established, this hardy perennial exhibits impressive drought tolerance, making it a low-maintenance option for busy gardeners. To promote continuous blooming, it is advisable to cut back spent flowers, encouraging the plant to produce new blooms throughout the season.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, Aster alpinus ‘Albus’ plays a vital role in supporting local wildlife. Its abundant early-season flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, hoverflies, and butterflies, contributing to a healthy garden ecosystem. This resilient plant is well-suited to the UK climate, withstanding temperatures as low as -15°C, ensuring that it remains a reliable and beautiful addition to any garden setting. Height: 25 cm (10 in). Spread: 30 cm (12 in).
