Description

Armeria pseudarmeria, commonly known as great thrift or sea pink, is a delightful perennial that forms attractive mounds, making it a favorite among gardeners. This plant is celebrated for its stunning clusters of flowers, which bloom in shades ranging from soft pink to white, and its evergreen, grass-like foliage that adds texture to any landscape. Ideal for rockeries, borders, and coastal gardens, Armeria pseudarmeria brings a touch of charm and elegance to outdoor spaces, thriving in environments where other plants might struggle.

The foliage of this clump-forming perennial consists of narrow, grassy leaves that can grow up to 20 cm long, maintaining their visual appeal throughout the year. In the summer months, the plant produces impressive flower heads on slender stems that can reach heights of 25 to 50 cm. Each flower head features globes of delicate blooms, measuring 3 to 4 cm across, which create a striking display from June to August, often extending into September. This extended flowering period ensures that gardens remain vibrant and colorful during the warmer months, attracting pollinators and enhancing the overall aesthetic.

Armeria pseudarmeria thrives in full sun and prefers sharp, well-drained soil, making it particularly well-suited for rock gardens, gravel beds, coastal areas, and even container arrangements. It demonstrates remarkable resilience, tolerating poor sandy soils, coastal salt spray, and drought conditions once established. This low-maintenance plant is evergreen in favorable conditions and can withstand temperatures as low as -15 °C, making it hardy across the UK. To keep the plant healthy and encourage continued blooming, simple care practices such as deadheading spent flowers and dividing clumps every few years can be employed to rejuvenate its vigor.

How to Grow
Plant Armeria in full sun on well drained soil. Sea Thrift is tolerant of poor sandy soils once established and copes well in coastal areas. On heavier soils, incorporate plenty of grit to improve drainage, prior to planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Deadhead faded flowers to extend the flowering season throughout the summer. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of armeria in spring to maintain their vigour.
