Description

Named after the smallest planet in the solar system, Arbutus unedo ‘Mercurius’ offers all the rewards of a Strawberry Tree in the smallest of garden spaces.

Growing to only a maximum of around 70cm in 7 years, ‘Mercurius’ forms a bushy, rounded, evergreen shrub that is perfect for container-growing on a balcony or terrace, or planted in the open ground as a small feature shrub or low hedge. Small and slender evergreen foliage emerges with a bronze tinge against reddish stems that deepen in colour as they age. The glossy foliage matures to dark green, providing all-year-round colour and structure. In early autumn, abundant clusters of dainty bell-shaped flowers appear. The nodding flowers are creamy white with a pink flush, standing out nicely against the rich backdrop of leathery leaves. The flowers are followed by small, bright red, strawberry-like fruits which develop from the previous year’s blooms.

Arbutus unedo ‘Mercurius’ is very drought tolerant once established and ideal for coastal and urban gardens, associating perfectly with Mediterranean plantings and providing a banquet of late food for pollinating insects in wildlife-friendly gardens. Height and spread: 70cm (28in).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Strawberry Trees in any non alkaline, fertile, moist but free draining soil. Incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting. Choose a position in full sun with shelter from cold winds. Although perfectly hardy once mature, Arbutus plants will appreciate a layer of fleece for winter protection when young.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water Strawberry Trees regularly until fully established. Once established, Arbutus trees require little attention except for the occasional removal of damaged, diseased and misplaced shoots in winter or spring.
