Description

Aquilegia x hybrida 'Earlybird Red White' is a stunning and graceful addition to any garden, bringing a splash of vibrant color and a delicate shape that not only enhances the landscape but also supports local pollinators. Its compact growth makes it a versatile choice, fitting seamlessly into various garden designs, whether they are formal or have a more relaxed cottage feel.

The plant showcases eye-catching bicolored flowers, featuring bright red outer petals that beautifully contrast with the pure white inner petals, often highlighted by a cheerful yellow center. These blooms typically appear from late spring to early summer, around May to June in the UK, and they emit a mild, sweet fragrance that adds to their charm. The foliage consists of finely divided, fern-like leaves that create a tidy mound, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the plant.

With a height and spread of about 30cm and blooms measuring approximately 4cm across, this hardy perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral. To keep the plant healthy, it’s important to maintain consistent moisture without allowing water to accumulate. Regular deadheading will promote extended blooming, and dividing the clumps every few years will ensure they remain vigorous. Additionally, applying mulch can help retain soil moisture and keep weeds at bay.

More Info
Columbines hybridize readily. If seedlings are not wanted, deadhead faded aquilegia flowers to prevent them self seeding. Aquilegias dislike disturbance but overcrowded clumps may be lifted and divided in spring when necessary.Caution: irritant to skin and eyes, harmful if eaten.
