Description

The 'Chocolate Fountain' variety of Albizia julibrissin combines stunning exotic appeal with resilience, making it a fantastic choice for gardens in the UK. Its distinctive leaves and summer flowers ensure year-round charm, and its compact size makes it adaptable to different garden environments.

This deciduous small tree or large shrub showcases foliage that starts as a bronze-green in spring, transitioning to a rich burgundy-purple, creating a beautiful contrast throughout the growing season. In summer, fluffy rose-pink flower clusters with prominent stamens bloom, adding an exotic flair. The deep burgundy-purple leaves continue to provide visual interest from spring to autumn, and after the flowers fade, flat, bean-like seed pods appear, lasting into the winter.

This plant flourishes in full sunlight and thrives in well-drained soils, showing adaptability to various types including chalk, loam, or sand, regardless of whether the pH is acidic, neutral, or alkaline. It has moderate water requirements and becomes drought-resistant once it is well-established. For optimal growth, it is best positioned in sheltered areas, particularly those facing south or west. This hardy plant can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C, making it suitable for all of the UK and northern Europe.

It serves as a stunning focal point in small to medium gardens and is also perfect for large pots, adding architectural flair to patios and terraces. Its compact nature and eye-catching foliage make it an excellent choice for urban gardens, while its nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Minimal pruning is needed; simply remove any dead or damaged branches in late winter or early spring. To encourage healthy growth, apply a balanced fertilizer in the spring and keep the soil moist during the establishment phase. Once established, it can tolerate drought conditions, but in colder areas, it's wise to plant it in a sheltered location to shield it from harsh winds.

The plant can reach a height and spread of approximately 400–800 cm, taking about 10–20 years to reach its ultimate size, and it features a gracefully arching, weeping form that creates a beautiful cascading silhouette.

How to Grow
Pot up silk tree plants and grow them on in a cool, bright position until large enough to plant outside. Prior to transplanting, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant albizia in a sheltered position in any well drained soil in full sun.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Prune silk trees in winter or early spring, reducing the stems to fit the available space, and removing any damaged, crossing or wayward branches entirely. Albizia may be successfully wall trained. During the first few years prune to achieve a permanent framework of stems. Thereafter the stems of wall trained albizia can be reduced annually to within 4 buds from the permanent framework.
