Description

The stripey flowers of Agapanthus ‘Donau’ capture attention at the front of the border and make great cut flowers. The large flowerheads measure up to 15-20cm across, each carrying around 40-60 florets. Deep violet buds open into pale blue flowers, each marked with a dark blue central stripe. Plant this deciduous perennial along the edge of a dry, sunny border where its clumps of strappy green leaves lend textural foliage interest long before the architectural flowers appear. It also makes a drought-tolerant specimen for a patio container. Height: 80cm (31in). Spread: 45cm (18in).

How to Grow

Grow Agapanthus in rich fertile, well drained soil, in a sunny position. When growing Agapanthus in patio containers use a soil based compost, such as John Innes No.3 .

Plant bareroots at the earliest opportunity following delivery. Should soil conditions prevent planting directly into borders (if soil is frozen or waterlogged), bareroots should be potted up, watered sparingly and grown on in a cool position for planting out at a later date.

Choose a sunny or semi shaded position in moist, well drained soil and work some well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the bareroot with its roots spread out and deep enough that the crown of the plant is just a few cm below soil level. Backfill the hole with soil and firm the plant in gently. Leave a slight depression around the plant - this will help to direct water towards the roots.

More Info
Feed and water African Lilies regularly throughout the growing season. Leave faded Agapanthus flower stems intact to enjoy their architectural seed heads during autumn. When the first frost blacken the seed heads, cut the stems back to ground level. Protect plants outdoors from severe winter weather by providing a dry mulch of bark chips or straw in late autumn. Container grown plants can be moved to a frost free position over winter. Divide agapanthus clumps in spring when they become over crowded.
