Description

Wisteria floribunda 'Violacea Plena' is a distinguished and rare cultivar of Japanese wisteria, celebrated for its exquisite fully double flowers that exhibit a striking violet-purple hue. This variety stands out as one of the few double-flowered wisterias, creating a romantic and cascading display characterized by its remarkable floral density and subtle fragrance.

This vigorous climber features twining stems that spiral clockwise, adorned with deciduous, pinnate leaves comprising 13 to 19 leaflets that emerge in a bronze tone before maturing to a rich mid-green. The cascading racemes of double flowers can reach lengths of up to 30 cm (12 in) and typically bloom from late spring to early summer, offering a lightly scented aroma that is sweeter and less intense than that of single-flowered varieties.

Wisteria floribunda 'Violacea Plena' thrives best in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained soil, although it can tolerate various soil types as long as they are not waterlogged. This hardy plant is ideal for training on walls, pergolas, or large arches, where its abundant flower clusters can be showcased. To maintain its health and promote flowering, it requires biannual pruning—once in summer and again in late winter—and provides an attractive habitat for bees and other pollinators.

How to Grow
Grow wisteria plants in a sunny or semi shaded site in any moist, well drained soil. Wisteria flower buds can be damaged by hard spring frosts so choose a sheltered position. Prior to planting add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to the soil. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate and sturdy support, such as strong trellis or wires attached to walls and pergolas.Standard wisterias will especially need a sturdy support when grown to protect the head from damage by strong winds .

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until fully established. In autumn or spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Prune wisteria in July and again in February. During the first two years, prune wisteria to create a framework of permanent stems. Tie in selected lateral shoots to sturdy supports and cut back unwanted growth. Once the desired framework has been created, continue pruning wisteria twice a year to contain the plants growth within its allotted space.
