Umbrella Bamboo are easy to grow and quick to fill out, making them a top foliage choice for privacy screening and blocking road noise and traffic pollution. Young plants produce green stems, but once established in the garden, (after 3 to 5 years) these will colour to a deep ruby red. Clump forming Fargesia 'Asian Wonder' boasts attractive olive green foliage which contrasts beautifully with the colourful canes, giving it a tropical appearance. As the canes mature, strip some of the lower foliage away to show off the highly decorative stems. A top architectural plant for adding structure and movement to the garden. Height: 3m (10'). Spread: 1.2m (4').

How to Grow

When growing Umbrella Bamboo in pots, choose a soil based compost. Repot the plant, firming well into the new container, then water well and position in full sun or semi shade. Alternatively plant Umbrella Bamboos directly into borders in any moist, free draining soil. Bamboos dislike poor, dry soils. If your soil is particularly free draining, improve it by adding plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost prior to planting. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold, drying winds. Fargesia murieliae spreads via underground rhizomes so is best given space to grow. Alternatively surround the roots with a barrier to restrict the plant’s spread.

More Info

Feed and water bamboo plants regularly, particularly when grown in containers. Repot into successively larger containers as plants increase in size. Once bamboo plants are established, thin out any weak, damaged or unwanted canes in spring, cutting them back to ground level, and apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. Mature bamboos can be divided in spring if clumps become congested.
