Tree Peony 'Luoyang Hong' is a superb variety with upward facing, magenta pink flowers. There are few plants that can compete with the beauty of a tree peony in full bloom. A mature plant can boast in excess of a hundred exotic blooms, each measuring up to 25cm (10") or more in diameter! These exceptional shrubs are hardy and disease resistant, and will continue to bloom for a lifetime. The exotic flowers of the tree peony are simply breathtaking in borders and make exquisite cut flowers for vases indoors. Height and spread: 150cm (60").

Culinary note: The petals can be added to salads, or cooked slightly and sweetened for a treat. Peony water was also once considered a delicacy and the blooms can be floated in punches. For more details about edible flowers click here.

How to Grow

Grow tree peonies in a sunny or semi shaded position that is sheltered from cold winds and shaded from strong early morning sunlight. They prefer a well drained, rich fertile soil. This is best achieved by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits at least 10cm (4") below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Prune tree peonies in spring whilst dormant, removing crossing and damaged stems to create a healthy open framework. After pruning, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: All parts are harmful if eaten.
