Description

Let this fabulous peacock strut its stuff in your patio containers, dazzling with its brilliantly exotic colours and intricate tiger spots!

Also known as ‘Tiger flower’ ‘Peacock Flower’ and ‘Jaguar Flower’ it’s easy to see why this bulbous perennial from South and Central America has captured attention since the time of the Aztecs. The flowers of Tigridia pavonia have a unique structure with three prominent outer sepals encircling much smaller inner petals. Their vivid palette ranges from scarlet and pink to orange, yellow, and white, and while each bloom lasts just a single day, they appear in steady succession over several weeks, creating a continuous display of colour throughout July and August.

This little-known bulb deserves to be much more widely grown. Perfect for conservatory containers or summer patio pots, it creates a captivating display that’s sure to turn heads. Ultimate height: 30cm (12in). Ultimate spread: 10cm (4in).

How to Grow

Plant March to May in pots, 15-20cm deep and 15-20 apart with the pointed side facing upwards. Keep in a cool but frost-free greenhouse. Use a well-draining compost mix and water sparingly until growth commences after which watering can be increased. Move outside once all risk of frost has passed. After flowering, remove spent flowerheads and allow the compost to dry out, trimming off any remaining foliage. Replant the following spring.
