Description

Symphyotrichum novae-angliae ‘Purple Dome’, previously known as Aster novae-angliae, is a delightful and compact variety of New England aster that creates a lovely rounded mound adorned with striking deep purple, semi-double daisy flowers. This plant truly shines in late summer and autumn gardens, where its tidy growth habit and vibrant color make it a favorite among gardeners. Not only does it enhance the visual appeal of borders during the latter part of the growing season, but it also serves as a valuable resource for pollinators, attracting butterflies and bees with its abundant nectar.

Reaching a height of approximately 45 to 60 centimeters, ‘Purple Dome’ naturally forms a bushy mound that promotes good air circulation, helping to prevent issues like powdery mildew. The plant is generously covered in rich violet-purple blooms, each measuring around 4 centimeters across, which typically last for about four weeks. This late-season display of color is not only aesthetically pleasing but also beneficial for local wildlife, making it an excellent choice for those looking to support pollinator populations in their gardens.

This hardy perennial thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil, although it can adapt to a range of soil types from average to rich. Its natural resistance to powdery mildew means it remains compact without the need for staking, and gardeners can enhance its bushiness by pinching back the stems in early summer. Ideal for late-season borders, cottage gardens, prairies, or even as part of container arrangements and cut-flower bouquets, ‘Purple Dome’ is easy to maintain. Simply prune it back to the ground after flowering and divide the clumps every two to four years to keep them rejuvenated. Fully hardy in the UK, this charming aster is well-suited to various climates and soil conditions, making it a versatile addition to any garden. Height: 60 cm (24 in) Spread: 60 cm (24 in) .
