Strawberry ‘Sonata’ is a superb mid-season variety, ready to pick from late June—just in time to enjoy during the height of summer. Renowned for its high yields, this reliable performer offers a harvest containing a high percentage of premium quality strawberries.
Each berry is generously sized and uniform, with firm, sweet flesh that delivers a classic strawberry flavour. One of ‘Sonata’s’ standout qualities is its resilience; the fruits hold up exceptionally well in wet weather, showing excellent resistance to splitting and retaining their quality even after summer showers. This makes them ideal for UK gardens, where unpredictable weather is often part of the growing challenge.
Not only do the berries handle the elements with ease, but they also keep well once picked—perfect for those who want to enjoy their harvest over several days. Ultimate height: 20cm (8in). Ultimate spread: 30cm (12in).

Your bare roots should be planted at the earliest opportunity following delivery whilst the plants are still dormant.
Plant strawberry plants in autumn or late spring in a sheltered, sunny position in well manured, free draining soil. Plant strawberry plants every 45cm (18”) in rows spaced at 75cm (30”) apart. Avoid planting them too deeply as this may cause them to rot. Alternatively try growing strawberry plants in hanging baskets or in specially designed strawberry planters for the patio.
For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.
Water strawberries frequently throughout the growing season and weed regularly between rows. When growing strawberry plants in baskets and containers, they will also need feeding every two weeks.
From early summer, remove any runners that are produced as these will weaken the plants vigour. Protect the developing fruit from slugs and snails by spreading straw around each plant. Positioning a net over the plants will also prevent crop damage by birds. The netting and straw can be removed after cropping to allow better air flow around the crown of the plant. Mulch strawberry plants with well rotted manure in spring.
Although strawberry plants will continue to fruit in successive years, the crop will become considerably reduced and it is advisable to completely replace strawberry plants every 3 years.
