Sowing Months Harvest Months

The thinnings can be trimmed off their roots and cooked. Water freely through the season and harvest by picking a few leaves, snapping them off close to the ground, from several plants rather than completely stripping one. If there are more leaves ready than you can use it is still best to pick them to encourage a steady supply of young green leaves.

Where to sow: Direct sow outdoors in an open sunny position.
Preparation: Prepare the soil by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones.
Sowing: Sow seed thinly, 1cm (1/2in) deep in broad drills which are 30cm (12in) apart.
Growing: Thin seedlings to 5cm (2in) apart when large enough to handle. Trim the roots off the thinnings and cook or use in salads. Water freely through the season.
Harvesting: Harvest by picking a few leaves, snapping them off close to the ground, from several plants rather than completely stripping one. If there are more leaves ready than you can use it is still best to pick them to encourage a steady supply of young green leaves.
