Description How to Grow More Info Delivery
The distinctive, lightly scented purple blooms of Solanum crispum ‘Glasnevin’ betray its close family ties with the humble potato. This fascinating climber will quickly scale walls and trellis with its vigorous, twining stems. This superb RHS AGM variety wears a cloak of bright green foliage that remains semi-evergreen in mild areas, and makes a pretty backdrop for the flowers and white berries that follow. The Chilean Potato Tree, as it is sometimes known, is best grown in a sunny south facing spot where it is reliably hardy. Height: 5m (16'). Spread: 3m (10').

Flowering Months
Feed and water regularly until established. Prune Solanum plants back to a pair of healthy buds after flowering, cutting shoots to within three or four buds of the permanent framework. Thin out overcrowded shoots. Apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in spring. Caution: All parts are harmful if eaten.
Train Solanum against sturdy supports such as trellis or strong wires attached to walls and pergolas. Grow in a fertile, moist, free draining soil in a sunny position, preferably against a south-facing wall. When planting Solanum in poor soils, add plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil structure.
