Description

Skimmia japonica 'Passion' is an eye-catching evergreen shrub that stands out for its ornamental berries and compact growth habit, making it a favorite among gardeners seeking year-round visual interest. This female cultivar thrives when paired with a male pollinator, such as Skimmia japonica 'Obsession', which is essential for the production of its vibrant red fruits. The shrub's dense, glossy dark green leaves provide a lush backdrop throughout the seasons, ensuring that it remains a focal point in any landscape.

In the spring, 'Passion' delights with clusters of fragrant, creamy-white flowers that not only enhance its beauty but also attract a variety of pollinators, contributing to the overall health of the garden ecosystem. As autumn approaches, the shrub transforms, producing an abundance of striking red berries that persist into winter, adding a splash of color during the colder months. To achieve this impressive berry display, it is crucial to plant 'Passion' in proximity to a male Skimmia, as this relationship is vital for successful pollination and fruit set.

This versatile shrub prefers partial to full shade and thrives best in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It is particularly well-suited for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or even container arrangements, making it a flexible choice for various garden designs. Fully hardy in the UK, Skimmia japonica 'Passion' can withstand typical winter conditions without the need for protective measures. Minimal pruning is required, and a light trim after flowering can help maintain its shape, ensuring that this charming shrub continues to enhance your garden for years to come. Height: 100 cm (39 in) Spread: 100 cm (39 in).

How to Grow
Grow Skimmia plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun, as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Skimmia plants will require very little pruning. After flowering, trim them lightly to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth.
