Description

Skimmia japonica 'Miracle' is a stunning evergreen shrub that captivates gardeners with its delightful combination of fragrant flowers, striking red berries, and lush, glossy leaves. This plant is particularly favored for shaded areas of the garden, where its compact, bushy growth habit can thrive. The deep green foliage not only provides a rich backdrop but also maintains its vibrant appearance throughout the year, making it a reliable choice for those looking to enhance their outdoor spaces.

In the spring, 'Miracle' showcases its creamy-white flowers, which emit a pleasant fragrance that attracts a variety of pollinators, adding life and activity to the garden. As the seasons change, female plants produce bright red berries during autumn and winter, creating a stunning visual contrast against the evergreen leaves. This seasonal interest not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the garden but also provides a food source for birds and other wildlife during the colder months.

To ensure optimal growth, Skimmia japonica 'Miracle' thrives in partial to full shade and prefers sheltered locations that protect it from harsh weather conditions. It flourishes in moist, well-drained soil that ranges from acidic to neutral, making it versatile for various garden settings. This hardy shrub is well-suited for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and even container planting, offering a low-maintenance option that consistently delivers ornamental beauty throughout the year. Its resilience to typical winter conditions across the UK further solidifies its status as a beloved choice among gardeners. Height: 60 cm (24 in) Spread: 60 cm (24 in).

How to Grow
Grow Skimmia plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun, as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Skimmia plants will require very little pruning. After flowering, trim them lightly to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth.
