Description

Skimmia japonica 'Lipstick' is a captivating evergreen shrub that brings a touch of elegance to any garden, particularly in shaded areas. Its glossy, dark green leaves create a lush backdrop, while the vibrant red flower buds emerge in late winter to early spring, eventually unfurling into delicate creamy-white flowers. This striking contrast not only enhances the visual appeal of the plant but also provides a delightful spectacle as the seasons change, ensuring that your garden remains lively and engaging throughout the year.

One of the most enchanting features of the 'Lipstick' variety is its ability to produce clusters of bright red berries during the autumn and winter months, provided that the female plants are adequately pollinated. These berries add a pop of color to the landscape, attracting birds and other wildlife, which further enriches the garden's ecosystem. Additionally, the leaves of this shrub are not only visually appealing but also release a pleasant aroma when crushed, adding an olfactory dimension to its charm.

Skimmia japonica 'Lipstick' thrives in partial to full shade and prefers sheltered, frost-free locations, making it an excellent choice for urban gardens and woodland settings. It flourishes in moist, well-drained soil that ranges from acidic to neutral, demonstrating a remarkable tolerance for urban pollution. Fully hardy in the UK, this resilient shrub can withstand typical winter conditions, making it a reliable addition to borders, woodland gardens, and even container plantings, where it can be enjoyed up close. Height: 90 cm (35 in) Spread: 90 cm (35 in).

How to Grow
Grow Skimmia plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun, as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Skimmia plants will require very little pruning. After flowering, trim them lightly to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth.
