Description

Salvia argentea, often referred to as silver sage, is a captivating biennial or short-lived perennial that is cherished for its stunning rosettes of large, velvety, silvery-white leaves. This plant is primarily cultivated for its ornamental foliage, which adds a bold texture and striking contrast to sunny garden borders and gravel gardens. The impressive basal rosette formed by its woolly leaves creates a dramatic visual impact, making it a favorite among gardeners looking to enhance their outdoor spaces with unique and eye-catching plants.

In its second year, silver sage produces tall flower spikes adorned with delicate, pale cream to white flowers that bloom during the summer months. While these flowers can add an additional layer of beauty to the plant, many gardeners choose to remove them to maintain the pristine shape of the foliage. This practice helps to ensure that the plant's striking leaves remain the focal point of the garden, allowing the silver sage to shine in its role as a textural accent. The plant thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, particularly favoring gritty or sandy types, while it is essential to avoid wet or heavy soils, especially during the winter months.

Typically grown as a biennial, silver sage may have a short lifespan but can self-seed under favorable conditions, allowing it to persist in the garden. It is particularly useful for dry borders, Mediterranean-style plantings, or as an architectural feature that draws the eye. While it is hardy in most regions of the UK, it may require some protection in colder or wetter areas. This low-maintenance plant benefits from occasional tidying, such as removing spent flower spikes and old leaves, to keep its appearance fresh and appealing. Additionally, when allowed to flower, silver sage can attract pollinators, contributing to the overall health and vibrancy of the garden ecosystem. Height: 90 cm (35 in) Spread: 60 cm (24 in)
