Sow seed on the surface of good, free-draining, seed compost. Cover with a very fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place container in a propagator or seal container inside a polythene bag and place at a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until after germination which usually takes 7-21 days. Do not exclude light, as this helps germination.

Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle into trays or 7.5cm (3in) pots. Gradually acclimatise plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart.

Some of the first plants I have grown from seed in our garden. Almost all of the seeds germinated. Some are darker shades than others, I really don't like the ones that came through as a muddy orange. However, even some of those gradually became a stronger red as they hit their stride. There were a couple of very dark ones, which were fantastic. So, a really strong performer that I will buy again. Just a shame in my batch some weren't pure cherry red.

Rudbeckia "Cherry Brandy" 2013-02-24

I sowed a full packet of these last spring expecting only a few to germinate, but I was pleasantly surprised when they all germinated, so much so, that I had to give some plants away! They provided beautiful colour, I especially loved the darker shades and was surprised to find they grew in tawny shades too. They flowered until October and then gave nice structure in the winder with their seed heads. I've already bought another packet to sow this year. Smashing plant!
