Description
The Cherry Laurel is a dense evergreen shrub that makes a popular hedging plant. The large glossy, rounded leaves form a lovely backdrop for the elegant creamy white flower spikes in Spring. The fragrant blooms are a magnet for pollinating insects. As the flowers fade, glossy cherry-red berries take their place, providing food for hungry birds. Prunus laurocerasus 'Rotundifolia' is a useful shrub growing equally well in full sun or in the shade of mature trees. This handsome RHS AGM variety makes a superb low maintenance specimen plant for borders, woodland areas and wildlife gardens. Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 4m (13'). Planting Distance: 50cm (20"). (3 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

How to Grow
Grow Cherry Laurel plants in sun or shade, in any moderately fertile, reliably moist, well drained soil. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant Prunus shrubs at the same depth as they were planted in their pots. Backfill the planting hole and water well to settle the soil. When planting a Cherry Laurel hedge, position the individual plants at a distance of 75cm (30") apart.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

More Info
Water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant. Once established, Prunus plants require only occasional attention, removing any damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in summer after flowering. If grown as a hedge, Cherry Laurel can be trimmed from early to mid spring, and tolerates hard pruning when necessary.
