Description

Holding an RHS Award of Garden Merit, Primula denticulata is an incredibly versatile little perennial. Tolerant of shade and poorly drained conditions, it is ideal for pondside or streamside planting and boggy areas. However, drumstick primrose is equally happy in containers or at the front of borders, even in full sun so long as the soil is moist. Purple flowers with a yellow eye are produced in tight, pom-pom-like globes on upright stems from April to June, which blend beautifully with ferns, hostas and other shade plants. Height and spread: 30cm (12in).

How to Grow
Primula denticulata is tolerant of almost any soil conditions and can be grown in either sun or shade, so long as the soil is moist if grown in full sun. However, its ideal conditions are moist, humus-rich soil in partial shade. Water regularly during hot, dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out. Deadhead faded primula flowers to encourage more blooms to be produced and divide over-crowded clumps between late autumn and early spring.
