Description

This collection is a mix of three amazing varieties which will offer fast and easy to grow crops. Plant in full sun and enjoy a delicious crop. They are a hardy bunch and will survive quite low temperatures down to -12 degrees! Delicious in soups, boiling, and a staple with your Sunday roast dinner.

This collection may contain some of the following varieties:

  • Broccoli 'Stromboli' - This vigorous variety produces firm, tight heads of Broccoli which are early to mature. Broccoli 'Stromboli' is a generous cropper that resists blindness, so you can be sure that each and every plant will earn its place on your vegetable plot! This nutritious crop makes a delicious addition to any meal and freezes well for longer storage. Height: 90cm (36"). Spread: 60cm (24").
  • Kale 'Dwarf Green Curled' - This popular, compact curly Kale is ideal for growing in windswept gardens or on poor soils. It produces attractive, dark, tightly frilled leaves of excellent quality. Like all Kale this variety is exceptionally hardy, standing well in the harshest of weather. Height: 60cm (24"). Spread: 45cm (18").
  • Cabbage 'Winter Jewel' - An outstanding introduction in ‘autumn and winter greens’. Produces even sized, smooth, dark leaved ‘greens’ to 30 cm (12’’) leaf length which are very slow to heart up, eventually forming compact 250g (8 oz) loose heads. It has superb winter hardiness, proved outstanding for its quality, yield and length of harvesting to April in the RHS overwintered/spring 2011 trial. Excellent flavour and bolting resistance. This cabbage matures to harvestable ‘greens’ approximately 60 days from transplanting, and will remain in condition for many weeks.

How to Grow
Pot up plug plants and grow them on in warm, frost free conditions until plants are well grown and all risk of frost has passed. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting out in a sheltered position in firm, rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun. Prepare the soil in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Take care when transplanting Calabrese as it resents root disturbance. Plant calabrese at a distance of 22cm (9") apart, and cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water the plants thoroughly after planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water Calabrese regularly and do not allow them to dry out as this may impair their development. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing and bring insect larvae to the surface. The main heads of Calabrese can be harvested from September when they reach 10cm (4") in diameter, before the flowers open. Leave the plant in the ground to allow sideshoots to develop. These can be harvested when they are 10cm (4") long. Regular picking will encourage more shoots to be produced. Culinary note: Calabrese is suitable for freezing.
