Description

Lustrous evergreen leaves and scented flowers make Pittosporum tobira a stand-out variety.

Slowly growing into a rounded, medium shrub, Pittosporum tobira is clothed in glossy, leathery leaves, 3-10cm long, that are held in characteristic whorls. In late spring and early summer, it bears large umbels of small, honey-scented flowers that emerge white and mature to yellow. In mild parts of the UK, Pittosporum tobira can be grown outside in a sheltered spot, thriving in sun or shade, although sunny positions will encourage the most flowers. It makes an excellent foundation shrub for a sheltered courtyard or coastal garden where it can be kept clipped into shape and even used as hedging. Alternatively, plant it into a large patio container and move it to a frost-free position to overwinter. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Maximum height: 4m (13ft).  Spread: 2.5m (8ft).

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Pittosporum tobira outside in a warm, sheltered position with protection from cold winds in mild areas of the UK, in any rich but well-drained soil. Sites with the protection of warm walls are especially suitable. Choose a position in sun or semi shade - leaves will deepen in colour in the shade but plants will be more floriferous in the sun.
More Info
Feed and water regularly until fully established. If necessary, lightly trim after flowering to maintain a pleasing shape.
