Description

Physocarpus opulifolius 'Little Joker' is a delightful compact shrub that brings vibrant color and structure to any garden. This deciduous plant is celebrated for its striking foliage, which transitions from a bright coppery-orange in spring to a rich deep burgundy as summer unfolds. Its rounded form not only adds visual appeal but also makes it an excellent choice for modern landscapes where space is at a premium. With its ability to maintain its vivid colors well into autumn, 'Little Joker' ensures that your garden remains lively even as the seasons change.

In addition to its stunning leaves, 'Little Joker' produces charming clusters of soft pink to white flowers in late spring, which serve as a lovely contrast to the foliage. Following the flowering period, the shrub develops decorative reddish seed capsules that enhance its visual interest throughout the summer and into fall. As the plant matures, its bark begins to exfoliate, revealing a textured, multi-tonal surface that adds a unique character to the winter landscape. This combination of features makes 'Little Joker' a standout choice for those looking to create a garden that captivates year-round.

This shrub is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical, as it requires minimal pruning to maintain its naturally compact and rounded shape. It thrives best in full sun, which promotes the most vibrant foliage colors, although it can tolerate partial shade. 'Little Joker' prefers well-drained soil and demonstrates impressive drought tolerance once established, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. Additionally, it is known for its good disease resistance, particularly against powdery mildew, ensuring that it remains healthy and beautiful throughout its life. Whether used in borders, containers, or as part of a low hedge, this shrub is a versatile addition to any small-space landscape. Height: 90 cm (35 in) Spread: 90 cm (35 in)

How to Grow
Plant Physocarpus in a fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or semi-shade. Physocarpus plants prefer an acid to neutral soil, but will tolerate more alkaline soils, although may they may become chlorotic in very chalky areas. Incorporate organic matter such as well-rotted manure or compost into the soil prior to planting.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info

Water regularly throughout the growing season until young Physocarpus plants are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost to the base of the plant. After flowering, cut back the flowered shoots to a healthy pair of buds, unless seedheads are required for late season interest.

Physocarpus opulifolius tolerates fairly hard pruning and may be cut back by half every few years to maintain a smaller size. On mature plants cut back about one quarter to one fifth of the oldest shoots to their base, to promote strong new growth.
