Description

Peony 'Ri Yue Tong Hui' is a remarkable cultivar of tree peony, aptly named “Sun and Moon in Harmony.” This variety showcases stunning double blooms that combine creamy white petals with striking deep purple flares, creating a captivating and sophisticated display in spring gardens.

The plant exhibits an upright and bushy growth habit, supported by a robust, well-branched woody structure. Its foliage consists of divided, rich green leaves that maintain their appeal throughout the seasons. The large blooms, which can be double or semi-double, emerge in mid to late spring, adding a vibrant touch to the landscape.

This deciduous peony thrives in full sun to partial shade, although it should be shielded from harsh afternoon sunlight and strong winds. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH and requires moderate watering to keep the soil moist during dry spells in spring and early summer. Fully hardy in the UK, it serves as an excellent focal point in borders or as a standout specimen in mixed or themed gardens, while its lightly scented flowers may attract occasional pollinators. Minimal maintenance is needed, with pruning limited to the removal of dead or damaged wood in early spring and annual mulching to retain moisture and enhance soil quality.

How to Grow
Grow tree peonies in a sunny or semi shaded position that is sheltered from cold winds and shaded from strong early morning sunlight. They prefer a well drained, rich fertile soil. This is best achieved by adding with plenty of well rotted manure or compost to the soil prior to planting, ensuring that it is mixed in thoroughly and deeply. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits at least 10cm (4") below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water regularly until peony plants are fully established. Thereafter, herbaceous peonies require little maintenance and will grow happily for many years if left undisturbed. However, they will appreciate a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost applied around the base of the plant in spring. Plants may take several years to establish before they produce their spectacular peony flowers. Caution: harmful if eaten.
