Description

Mahonia aquifolium offers year round interest in the garden. These handsome shrubs have glossy, weatherproof foliage, and spring blossom in acid yellow tones. The blue-black berries later add to the show, along with the leaves taking on a purple flush in autumn!

Mahonia plants are prickly evergreens, so are ideal for security planting and deterring burglars and cats from your garden. Mahonia aquifolium is spreading, and will fill awkward areas in shade, which is especially useful for woodland gardens. An easy to grow, low-maintenance shrub, that is ideal for small gardens and beginners. Height: 1m (39"). Spread: 1.5m (59").

Culinary note: The ripe fruits are too acidic to eat raw but can be stewed with sugar or other fruits and made into jelly or pies. They are used to help the milder flavour of some fruits or to make a lemonade-like drink. Young leaves are simmered in water and eaten as a snack. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Mahonia plants in borders or containers in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants become established. Mahonia plants require little pruning but may benefit from a trim in spring, once the winter berries have fallen, to remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant.
