Description
A low, spreading variety of this evergreen shrub, Mahonia aquifolium 'Apollo' is ideal for planting at the back of a border or even as groundcover in a woodland garden, where it's glossy interestingly shaped leaves will be shown off. The Oregon Grape, is also useful as part of a low hedge where the spiky leaves will help deter unwelcome intruders be it two or four legged! In spring the plants are topped with large racemes of bright yellow flowers which will develop into attractive blue/black berries during the year, making it a welcome treat for birds. A low maintenance, easy care shrub, which will soon fill up an awkward space in any garden. Height: 1m (39"). Spread: 1.5m (59").

Culinary note: The ripe fruits are too acidic to eat raw but can be stewed with sugar or other fruits and made into jelly or pies. They are used to help the milder flavour of some fruits or to make a lemonade-like drink. Young leaves are simmered in water and eaten as a snack. For more details about edible flowers click here.

Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.

How to Grow
Grow Mahonia plants in borders or containers in any rich fertile, well drained soil in full sun or semi shade. Although Mahonia plants are hardy they will appreciate a sheltered position away from cold, drying winds. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.
More Info
Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants become established. Mahonia plants require little pruning but may benefit from a trim in spring, once the winter berries have fallen, to remove any damaged or diseased stems and lightly shape the plant.
