Description
Quite unlike perennial varieties, this dwarf, hardy annual Lupin has a more compact habit that is perfectly suited to growing at the front of borders or in patio containers. Lupin 'Avalune Mixed' produces masses of short bicolour flower spikes on low bushy plants throughout summer. This quick growing annual flowers in just 12 weeks from sowing making it perfect for drift planting in bedding displays and filling gaps at the front of borders - just sow direct where you want them to grow. If you haven't got space for sweet peas, try growing these dwarf annual lupins, the blooms smell just as sweet! Height: 40cm (16in). Spread: 35cm (14in).

Sowing

Sow Lupin seeds from March to May on the surface of a good quality, free draining compost and lightly cover with a fine sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 18-25C (64-77F) or seal inside a clear polythene bag until the first seedlings show, which usually takes 18-21 days. Don’t exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the compost damp but not wet.

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7.5cm (3") pots and grow Lupin plants on in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions over 7 - 10 days before planting outdoors. Alternatively Lupins may be direct sown in spring into soil that has been raked to a fine tilth.

Plant Lupins at a distance of 35cm (14") apart on any well-drained soil in a sunny or semi shaded position.

More Info
Feed and water regularly until plants are fully established. Deadhead faded lupin flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms to be produced. Caution: Lupin seeds are harmful if eaten.
