Description
Often seen towering above the landscape in neat rows, Poplar trees are commonly used by farmers as windbreaks. They can also be happily incorporated into a hedging scheme as they will quickly adapt to being clipped regularly and this will encourage them to bush out and form an effective screen. The almost triangular shaped leaves turn to lovely shades of yellow before they fall to reveal the rough bark, the Lombardy Poplar's dense growth makes it attractive to nesting birds and it is also a good home for many insects. Height: 12m (39'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting distance: 45cm (18"). (3 plants per metre for a single line hedge).

Culinary note: Some parts of this plant are edible. The inner bark of this tree can be cut into strips and cooked like noodles or alternatively dried and crushed to add to flour to use in breadmaking. For more details about edible flowers click here.

How to Grow
Prior to planting Poplar, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and water well to settle the soil.

These plants are lifted from the nursery field when dormant, and sent to you in late autumn or spring for planting. They often look dead on arrival, but they are just resting in the dormant period and will establish quickly for a strong start in the garden come spring. Set out in prepared soil in holes wide enough and deep enough to lay out the roots. Tread down the planting soil to knock out air pockets. Water well to settle. Apply a mulch to protect roots from cold temperatures. If conditions prevent immediate planting, set roughly into loose soil or a pot of compost (‘heeling in’) to protect the roots. Set these at the same level as they were in the nursery field – you should see a soil line at the base of the stem. Stake trees, taller shrubs and roses to prevent root disturbance.

For more information and guidance check out our Gardening Guides.

More Info
Water young plants during particularly dry periods until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the hedge. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
