In Japan this hardy shrub has long been used for making a refreshing herbal brew. Better known as Amacha, this sweetly flavoured tea is made from the dried leaves of Hydrangea serrata. Once harvested, the leaves are left to dry in the sun before crushing and re-drying to create flavoursome tea-leaves. With no calories and a naturally sugary flavour, it makes a delicious alternative to normal caffeinated tea.
Hydrangea serrata 'Hydrantea' is easy to grow and makes a lovely addition to ornamental borders. Its large lace-cap flowers make a showy summer display, ranging from pink to mauve-blue depending on the acidity of your soil. With a neat and compact habit, it is perfect for a lightly shaded border or patio pot. Height and spread: 100cm (39").
Please note while Hydrangea serrata is a poisonous plant in its raw state, the specific fermented tea product (Amacha) is safe and commonly consumed. It should still be treated with caution, particularly to keep pets and children from eating the raw leaves.

Water regularly until plants are fully established. Leave the faded hydrangea flower heads in place until the new buds swell in spring to protect the delicate buds from frost damage. In early spring, dead head the old flowers, cutting them back to a pair of healthy buds just below.Â
In late winter or early spring remove one or two of the oldest stems to the base. This will encourage the development of new, replacement shoots and keep the shrub productive.
After pruning hydrangeas, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant. Caution: Contact with hydrangea foliage may irritate the skin and eyes and all parts are harmful if eaten.
